September 16th – Safe Sidewalks Project
On September 16, 2023, five Hawaii Kai Lions, two CIS, and one potential member patched numerous areas on Kaeleku St. in Kalama Valley. They endured the hot Hawaii Kai morning sun with minimal breezes. Scott Goto, from the City’s Division of Road Maintenance’s Malama O Ka Aina (MOKA) community volunteer program, was present and demonstrated how to mix and apply the concrete-like material (Polyfast) to the cracks.
Two teams of four were formed, with each on opposite sides of the street, working from 8:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m., with a total of 21 sites/sidewalk cracks being patched.
Lions participating in this event included Kendrick Chang, Ellsworth Fujii, Yolisa Ishibashi, CIS Anthony Nakamura, Bill Kern, Frances Lum, CIS Lyn Yee, and potential member Lonnie Bonds.
Thank you to those Lions, CISs, and potential member who volunteered for this ongoing project. It was a lot of hard work, but satisfying to know that we’re contributing to the safety of our community. And even with our cityissued safety vests, we were recognized as Lions by at least two individuals biking in the area. Keep up the good work Lions!
