About our club.

In 2023, our club celebrated its 50th anniversary year as the premiere service organization in the Hawaii Kai (Maunalua) community. Our club roster has over 55 members from a wide variety of backgrounds and interests. We have made tremendous progress in recent years to diversify our membership composition in gender, age, professional background. We have a growing active female membership base of over 20% women (Yes! Women can be Lions!) with the project ratio of women to men about 50-50. The age range of our members is wide — from mid 20’s to 103 years young. Our members are working professionals and retirees in the fields of law, medicine, banking, insurance, engineering, marketing, social services, and education. Our current and former members include a current Hawaii District Court Judge, a former Hawaii State Representative, and the Owners of successful local businesses like Hawaii Candy and Gyotaku Restaurants. Our members are also active volunteers and serve on the boards of other nonprofits and community organizations, including Livable Hawaii Kai Hui, Kaiser High School Friends of PTSA, and Boy Scouts of America Aloha Council. The club also has a few members who live on the mainland. We are proud that our members choose to remain active in the club and maintain their membership for many years — 15+ years average tenure.

What’s expected of a new member?

The Lions Club is a voluntary service organization and we want members who have a desire to serve the community. That said, we understand that people have other commitments, therefore, participation at projects is not mandatory. We do not impose a mandatory minimum meeting and/or project attendance requirements.

Projects normally take about 2 hours and are held on weekdays and weekends. Most of our projects are located in the Hawaii Kai community. Our club participates in a wide variety of projects and community events with an emphasis on causes relating to the environment, healthcare (vision and hearing screenings), and youth/schools. Due to the large volume of our club activities, we engage in ample activities for members of all ages and physical capabilities. Our club is also the charter sponsor organization of the Kaiser High School Leo Club (High school version of Lions), Boy Scout Troop 101, and Club Scout Pack 101 (Scouts unit based in Hawaii Kai). Due to the community’s longstanding loyal support of our Annual Father’s Day Breakfast (3,000+ tickets sold every year), we are fortunate to be a well-funded club that is able to support a wide-variety of community projects and provide monetary support to several youth organizations, Lunalilo Retirement Home, and the Hawaii Foodbank. We do not hold other fundraisers throughout the year and only ask our members to sell Father’s Day breakfast tickets to their personal friends and neighbors.

There are two 1-hour member meetings per month. Attendance is optional but encouraged and a nice place to meet fellow members and learn more about what the club does for the community. Club meetings allow our members get to know each other and learn how things work at Lions Clubs.

Like most clubs, there are dues (currently $100 annually) and other related expenses (e.g., meals, club apparel, convention fees). Our club has also a special fund to financially support members who express a need to help cover dues and expenses.

Regular meetings on 1st and 3rd Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. Board Meetings on 2nd Thursday of each month.
