May 6th – Patch Sidewalk Cracks on Wailua Street

On May 6, 2023, four Hawaii Kai Lions, two CIS, one soon-to-be Lion, and the District 50 Safe

Sidwalks Chair braved the strong winds on Wailua Street to patch the numerous sidewalk cracks.

This was a continuation from our January sidewalk repairs on Wailua Street, which is a major

thoroughfare between Hawaii Kai Drive and Lunalilo Home Road and where many Kaiser High

School students walk to and from school, as well as the hundreds of other pedestrians using these

sidewalks. Scott Goto, from the City’s Division of Road Maintenance’s Malama O Ka Aina

(MOKA) community volunteer program, was present and demonstrated how to mix and apply

the concrete-like material (Polyfast) to the cracks. Two teams of four were formed, with each on

opposite sides of the street, working from 8:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m., with a total of 40

sites/sidewalk cracks being patched.

Lions participating in this event included Kendrick Chang, Cynthia Chun, Joni Fukuji, CIS

Herbert Fukuji, Yolisa Ishibashi, CIS Anthony Nakamura, soon-to-be Lion Kelvin Kaneoka, and

District 50 Safe Sidewalks Chair Jerry Nagatani.

Scott also brought up using the Honolulu 311 App (downloaded onto your cellphone, using the

App Store), which may be used for reporting non-emergency issues to the City & County; such

as sidewalk cracks, graffiti, potholes, etc. Thank you to those Lions, CISs, and soon-to-be Lion

who showed up for this ongoing project. It was great to see everyone working together to get the

job done.
