February 2018 President’s Message
Aloha Lions,
Welcome to 2018. Hard to believe that January has come and gone already! How are we all doing with our New Year’s resolutions? The New Year is a great time to throw out the old and start the year off fresh. Of course, I tell myself that at the start of every year. Here it is, January is over, and I’m just getting started. So much for my resolution. I am determined to achieve my goal by the end of February.
On January 17th our membership director hosted a new member orientation at the clubhouse. Thanks to Lion Cindy Giorgis for arranging this meeting and the great powerpoint presentation. New Lions, Kerry, Marlene, and Ellsworth learned valuable information about the Lions organization and the Hawaii Kai Lions. Thanks to all the board members who assisted with the orientation and were able to answer all the questions.
On Sunday, January 21st the Hawaii Kai Lions and the Kaiser High School Leos Club joined forces to sort, clean, and package 2,083 pairs of glasses for shipment. These glasses will be shipped to third world countries and other areas where the populations do not have access to the great health care that we experience and take for granted. With all that manpower we finished in the task in record time. Thanks to our new Lion Ellsworth for chairing this project with guidance from PDG Roy Aoki.
Debbie Morikawa , owner of GymGuys, an in-home training company joined our meeting on January 18th. Debbie’s company is geared toward senior citizens. The will come to your home and evaluate your goals and set up a training program. The objective is to help you stay strong so that you are more able to age in place. Simple strengthening exercises were also demonstrated to help get us started on the right path.
A special Zone Club meeting was held on January 24th hosted by the Koko Head Lions. The four clubs in our zone were treated to a fabulous meal of homemade vegetable lasagna, garlic bread, salad, and ono carrot cake. We listened to a mother of an eight year old girl with Amblyopia give testimony as to the importance of early childhood vision screening. Her daughter was diagnosed with Amblyopia at five years old. After several years of treatment and wearing a patch on her eye she is on the road to recovering her eyesight. It’s been a long road for them and she stressed how much quicker the recovery is if caught at age 2-3. Our focus is now to ensure that we also screen the 2 and 3 year olds attending pre-school.
February 22nd is the 5th grade fitness challenge at Kaiser High School Complex from 7:30am until 12 noon and sign-up sheet is on the website. It’s a fun event and don’t worry, you’re not actually challenging a 5th grader!
Zone Social is coming on March 3rd at Natsunoya Tea House at 11:00 am until 2:00 pm. Cost is $35.00 per person and $3.00 valet parking. It is always a fun time with good food and getting to know the other club members and their CIS. Head count is due by February 15th. Sign up on the website and bring your checkbooks to the next meeting. Please make checks payable to David Iwana. He is pre-paying for everyone who signs up so only sign up if you’re sure you’ll be attending. Hope to see you there!
