January 21st – Fun Eyeglass Recycling Project
What a great turnout with 14 Hawaii Kai Lions, 13 Kaiser High School Leos (including advisor Gordon Chun) one CIS, and one potential Lion member participating in the Club’s annual Eyeglass Recycling project. For the first time in 4 years, the Lions and Leos met at the Lunalilo Senior Center clubhouse at 9:00 a.m. for the Eyeglass Recycling project. During the Covid years, the project was held at Frances’ house since the senior center was closed to visitors.
Some of the Leos were tasked to sort and select only reusable glasses, while everyone else cleaned and sorted 1,415 eyeglasses and packed them in shipping boxes. Lions who helped with the project were Jeanne Alices, Kendrick Chang, Cynthia Chun, Sandra Gomes, Alvin Hayashibara, Yolisa Ishibashi, David Iwana, Eric Kimura, Marja Leivo, Frances Lum, Ken Nishibun, Diane Taira, Kerry Yoon, CIS Lyn Yee, potential member Jackie Barnes, and Ellsworth Fujii.
Non-prescription sunglasses were placed in separate boxes and will be given to foreign fishermen who are at sea for months and can’t afford to buy sunglasses. This year, the D50 Eyeglass Committee asked that nice and sturdy eyeglass cases also be recycled so they can also be given to the fishermen.
Some of the Leos found some unusual/stylish sunglasses and posed for pictures. Everyone had fun and enjoyed themselves with this project.
The volunteers had Costco pizza and socialized after the project was completed. Thank you to Diane who made desserts and snacks for the volunteers!
Thank you to the Lions who collected and stored eyeglasses from the various stores and optometrists throughout the year.
Six boxes of recycled eyeglasses were dropped off at DHX on Monday.
