March 2018 President’s Message
Aloha Lions,
February, a short month was a blur. Between everyone’s daily life, like work, babysitting duties, travels, home projects, etc. our club members and CIS still manage to volunteer for projects. All your efforts and dedication to living the Lions’ mantra, “We Serve,” are greatly appreciated.
The Lunalilo Home Benefit Luau kicked off the month of February. Hawaii Kai Lions that attended enjoyed wonderful entertainment and fabulous Hawaiian food. We are very thankful for our relationship with the home and grateful for the use of their clubhouse.
Vision and hearing screenings are wrapping up for this school year. Thanks go out to all the volunteers, especially Lion Cynthia Chun. Lion Cynthia not only schedules all the screenings for our club, she also ensures that we are all well fed with a variety of ono homemade food each time. Thank you Cynthia!
Luckily the rainy weather settled down long enough for the Great Aloha Run to go off without a hitch on Presidents Day. Thank you to Lions Ellsworth and Peggy who made the very early morning trek to Aloha Stadium to assist other D-50 Lions Clubs with distributing T-shirts to the run/walk finishers.
February 22nd found us at Kaiser High School Complex for the annual 5th grade fitness meet. Students from Aina Haina, Hahaione, Koko Head, and Kamiloiki Elementary Schools participated in rigorous physical events to measure their fitness. Luckily the Lion volunteers did not have to participate in any physical activities. We were tasked with observing the students to ensure their activities were being performed correctly. Thank you to all the Lions and their CIS that assisted at this project.
Congratulations to all the Cub Scouts from Pack 101 who were recognized with badges and awards for their hard work throughout the year at their annual Blue and Gold Banquet on Saturday night. We were treated to a great meal provided by Maile’s Thai Bistro, while being entertained by the cub scouts with their amusing skits. Hawaii Kai Lions Club was recognized as the Pack’s sponsor and thanked for their service to Pack 101.
Congratulations to PDG Mervin Wee and Lion Peggy Oyama who were recognized by Lions Club International with the Centennial Membership Award. This award is recognition for recruiting and retaining new Lions and/or helping to organize a new Lions Club. LCI stated, ”Thanks to your efforts we will be able to serve more people in our next century of service.” Way to go PDG Mervin and Lion Peggy.
Would like to take a minute to recognize our own real life “Energizer Bunny,” Lion Peggy Oyama. Lion Peggy is always the first person to volunteer for projects both near and far, whether it’s our club or any other club needing assistance. This week Peggy was instrumental in rounding up support to get a hearing scheduled for Senate Bill 2087 amending the Good Samaritan Law (Related to Rescue Tubes & Emergency Rescue Devices.) She and Lion David Iwana will be heading down to the Senate to attend the hearing on March 1st to provide first hand testimony regarding this bill. There is never a shortage of energy or enthusiasm where Peggy and Lions are concerned. Before Lion Peggy and her CIS Loyal leave us permanently, I want to say a big THANK YOU for her generosity, dedication, and unselfish service. Where ever they land there will be a very lucky Lions Club waiting to welcome them with open arms. Thank you so much Lion Peggy for all you have done and continue to do. You will most certainly be missed.
One last word to the members; please notify PDG Roy or Incoming President Lion Sandy, which board position you would like to volunteer for next year. We are calling for volunteers to step up and support Lion Sandy’s efforts to put together a strong and supportive board which is vital to sustain an efficient and effective Lions Club. Mahalo!
Aloha and Mahalo,
Lion Jeanne
