November 2017 President’s Message
Aloha Lions,
September has come and gone so quickly, October has passed and here we go, full steam ahead, into the holiday season.
Decorations have gone up in the stores, with ribbons, wrap-ping paper, gift baskets, and every kind of holiday snack ready to be purchased and delivered to your favorite mail-man, hairdresser, doctor’s, and dentist’s office. The final proof the holidays are here is the Toys’R’Us insert in the Sunday paper and the neighbors are turning on their Christmas lights that never actually came down last year.
Vision and hearing screenings are happening weekly at the area schools. Thank you to Lion Cynthia Chun for coordinating and thank you to all the Lions who have come out to assist.
With all the tragic and destructive storms that have recently struck the mainland, Puerto Rico, and US Virgin islands, I felt it is a good time to have the discussion about disaster preparedness. Thanks go out to Matt Glei of Hawaii Kai Strong for his presentation to the club members at our October 5th meeting. It was informative and eye opening. Hawaii does not have the luxury of neighboring states that can drive in emergency supplies when the need arises. It is on each of us to prepare our families for these events. They say two weeks of emergency supplies is the standard in Hawaii. Hawaiian Electric Company provides an “Information Handbook for Emergency Preparedness.” You can contact them at 808-543-7511 or hawaiianelec-tric.com. to request a copy.
Kamiloiki Elementary School’s Carnival was held on October 20th. Thank you to all the Hawaii Kai Lions and Kaiser High School Leos for your assistance with selling the hot dogs, chips, and drinks. Koko Head School and Hahaione School Carnivals should follow in the future.
On October 28th and 29th, District 50 Hawaii hosted the first leadership development forum, “Leading Through Change.” Two dignitaries from LCI were featuredspeakers and breakout sessions were offered over the two days. Topics covered in the breakout sessions were: Leadership Development, Improving Our Public Image/Branding, Club Membership Improvement, Creative Fundraising and Support. Several of our members were facilitators while other club members attended the sessions. Looking forward to hearing all about it from our attendees.
Thank you to our club members led by Lions Eric Kvick, Bill Modglin, and David Iwana who facilitated sessions on the Rescue Tube project at the forum and at other club meetings. They have been busy along with Lions Peggy, Sandy, and Marja visiting other clubs throughout Oahu to educate them on how they can assist with our goal ofdistributing 1000 rescue tubes on Oahu.
Our first meeting in November will be a joint meeting with Koko Head Lions Club at Niu Valley Middle School Cafeteria. They will have a speaker to educate us about Diabetes awareness and prevention. Meeting will be on Wednesday November 1st not Thursday, the 2nd. Starting time for Koko Head Club meeting is 6:30 pm. Hope to see you all there.
Holiday Parade planning will be discussed at our Novem-ber 16th meeting. Parade is scheduled for Saturday November 25th and we are hoping to have maximum club participation that day, as we are the primary sponsor.
Finally, I’d like to welcome our newest Lion, Rylen Yamamoto to the club. Rylen was inducted at our meeting on October 19th with Lion Bill Modglin standing in for his sponsor, Lion Kendrick Chang. Welcome aboard Rylen.
Mahalo and Aloha,
Lion President Jeanne
