October 8th – Safe Sidewalk Project Report

On October 8, 2022, nine Hawaii Kai Lions and two Koko Head Lions met at Hahaione Elementary School to repair the sidewalk cracks on the streets surrounding the school.  These streets included Pepeekeo, Hahaione, and Hawaii Kai Drive.  Scott Goto, from the City’s Division of Road Maintenance’s Malama O Ka Aina (MOKA) community volunteer program, was present and demonstrated how to mix and apply the concrete-like material to the cracks.  Jerry Nagatani, District 50’s Safe Sidewalks chairperson, was also present to provide additional support.  Thereafter, the Lions split up into three groups, working until 10:15 a.m., with a total of 37 sites/sidewalk cracks being patched.

Lions participating in this event included Cynthia Chun, Dr. Roger Ede, Ellsworth Fujii, Yolisa Ishibashi, Walter Kuroiwa, Bill Kern, Marja Leivo, Frances Lum, Appan Subramanian, Ashley Uyehara (Koko Head Lions), and Shasta Yamada (Koko Head Lions).

While patching the sidewalks, a jogger mentioned that his aunt had fallen and hurt herself on the sidewalk we were repairing.  He, as well as another jogger, were thankful that we were doing the repairs.  It’s great to know that what we do helps the community and does make a difference. 

Thank you to those Hawaii Kai and Koko Head Lions who showed up to work in the sun, on hands and knees, and at times getting splattered by the concrete-like material.  Great job everyone!
